Spring Vehicle Cleaning Checklist for Alabama Drivers

Spring in Alabama is beautiful and brutal in equal measure. The dogwoods and redbuds bloom, the temperatures rise, and then the pollen arrives — coating every outdoor surface in a layer of yellow-green dust that turns washing a vehicle into a near-daily activity for a few weeks in March and April. By the time the major pollen season passes in May, vehicles in central Alabama have endured months of accumulation that warrants a thorough spring cleaning and fresh start.

This checklist covers what a proper spring vehicle refresh should address, and why each item matters for Alabama specifically.

Exterior: Work Through This Sequence

✓ Thorough Hand Wash

Spring cleaning starts with a complete hand wash using the two-bucket method and appropriate automotive soap. This is not the time for a quick rinse — work through every panel, the roof, the door jambs, the wheel wells, and underneath the front fascia where road contamination accumulates over winter driving. Use a dedicated brush for wheels and wheel wells rather than the same mitt used on paint.

✓ Decontamination Treatment

After washing, apply iron remover to the paint and wheels. Alabama winters are mild, but brake dust and road contamination still accumulate on wheels and paint surfaces throughout the cooler months. Iron remover dissolves the iron particles that washing cannot remove. Follow with tar remover on the lower panels and front fascia where road tar deposits are most concentrated.

✓ Clay Bar Treatment

After chemical decontamination, clay bar treatment removes the remaining bonded contamination that chemistry leaves behind. After months of driving through pollen, road grime, and winter rainfall, most vehicles have accumulated significant bonded surface contamination. The rough texture that clay treatment removes is particularly pronounced in spring.

✓ Paint Condition Assessment

With the paint thoroughly clean, examine it in direct sunlight for swirl marks, scratches, or oxidation. Spring is the natural time to schedule paint correction if the paint has accumulated visible swirl marks or shows early signs of oxidation — before the summer UV intensity makes these conditions worse through the hottest months of the year.

✓ Paint Protection Application or Refresh

If paint protection — wax, sealant, or ceramic coating booster — was last applied in fall, spring is the time to refresh it. Paint protection that has depleted through winter washing leaves the clear coat unprotected against the intense UV radiation of an Alabama summer, which is the single greatest threat to clear coat longevity. Fresh protection going into summer is significantly more valuable than fresh protection applied in September after the peak UV exposure period has passed.

✓ Headlight and Trim Inspection

Check headlights for yellowing or haziness that may have progressed over the winter. Note any faded plastic trim that needs restoration treatment. Spring detailing is a good time to address these items so they are not ignored through another year of the most UV-intensive season.

Interior: Post-Pollen and Post-Winter

✓ Complete Vacuum

A thorough vacuuming addresses the debris accumulation of fall and winter: tracked-in mud from winter weather, pollen that entered through the ventilation system during the early spring rains, and general use debris. Use appropriate attachments for seat crevices and under seat areas where debris accumulates out of sight.

✓ Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter catches the particles that would otherwise enter the vehicle through the HVAC system. After a winter and spring pollen season, the filter is substantially loaded with dust, debris, and pollen. A clogged filter reduces HVAC airflow efficiency and allows particles to bypass the filter into the interior. Spring is the ideal time to replace it — before summer A/C season begins and while the major pollen accumulation is fresh.

✓ Extraction Cleaning if Needed

If winter use introduced any moisture-related odor — wet boots on carpet, a wet umbrella stored in the rear, sports equipment from the late winter season — spring extraction cleaning addresses both the contamination and any early mildew development before summer heat and humidity create ideal mold conditions from existing moisture.

✓ Leather Conditioning or Fabric Protection

Spring conditioning of leather interiors prepares leather for the summer months, when Alabama heat will reach interior temperatures that accelerate moisture loss from the leather. Well-conditioned leather going into summer is more resistant to the drying effects of extreme heat than leather starting summer in a depleted condition.

Fabric protection reapplication if interior upholstery was cleaned makes sense before summer, when the combination of traffic, heat, and active use makes staining events more likely.

Scheduling

The ideal time for a spring vehicle refresh is after the major pollen peak — typically mid to late May in central Alabama — so you are cleaning the full pollen accumulation rather than starting over before pollen season is complete. This also positions the vehicle well going into the summer UV season with fresh protection applied.
